Birth Stories Channel

We are living during a time when our most basic ways of being human and in relationship with one another are increasingly commodified and sold back to us, or explained to us by self appointed experts, and largely performative or at least well documented for social media. So for most of us we are watching more ceremonies, rituals and gatherings on social media than we are participating in within our own communities.

For these reasons it’s important to remember that the ways our ancestors gathered was more frequently functional than mystical. Of course there were sacred gatherings throughout the year marking significant events evoking the mystery, but for the most part we sat in circle with other women for functional reasons.

We had to collect water at the Well and while we waited we exchanged stories with other women about every aspect of daily life, sharing stories of babies who were teething and not sleeping at night. Of what remedies and plants could soothe the baby through their teething. We washed clothes together at the river and would sing songs and create music to pass the time of tedious washing.

Even 30 years ago most of us washed our clothes in the neighborhood washing mat so we had a neighborhood place to commune, to gossip, to joke, to warn of bad news, to talk, to become better acquainted and create community. In the evenings we gathered around the fire, we did this to keep warm but in doing so we had a shared space to share stories, reveal remedies, sing songs, solve problems, make agreements and become informed, entertained and care for one another.

reating a Community of Belonging and Connection

Many of us are longing for belonging because we don’t have access to communal spaces in our communities. For these reasons I created the BIRTH OF A MAMA platform so that women can gather in a way that is possible for those lacking community in their lives. I created[1] BIRTH OF A MAMA so that women otherwise disconnected from one another could share their birth stories with each other.

For close to 8 years the platform has united pregnant women and new mothers from across the globe. The platform has become a strong community with a recognisable vibe and energy. It remains dynamic in shaping the birth world and giving voice to the stories of pregnant and birthing women
